Australia prides itself on being a successful multicultural society. According to the 2016 Census, nearly half of all Australians were born overseas or had a parent born overseas and 21% of Australians speak a language other than English at home.

Why therefore has a recent study examining the representation of culturally diverse Australians in the media revealed that the faces we see on TV news don’t reflect the diversity we boast about?

The report by Media Diversity Australia (2019) also looked at 19,000 items fromAustralian free-to-air networks and found the lack of diversity is also reflected in the stories and issues they examine.
